How Being a Morning Person Can Improve Your Life

Waking up in the wee hours of the morning may sound like a terrible idea. I mean, what’s not to love about staying in bed until absolutely necessary, especially as winter approaches and it gets colder outside?

But before you hit the snooze button on this topic, here are some reasons to consider getting up just that little bit earlier tomorrow:

  1. You’re more productive
What do the most successful people all have in common? They get up extra early, ready to tackle the day. In one study, Harvard biologist Christoph Randler found that undergrad students who associate themselves as morning people are more likely to agree with statements that reflect a go-getter mentality. Starting your day early can put you in the right mindset to get things done and set the tone to the rest of your day. The mind is usually most energised and motivated in the early mornings, so start ticking off that to-do list and you’ll be rewarded with a sense of accomplishment.

  2. You get less distractions
Waking up early gives you an opportunity to take time before your busy day starts for yourself, without distractions. Take a few minutes to enjoy your cup of coffee, meditate, journal or just to plan out your day. Fit in a mindful yoga session or a workout, without the interference from needy partners or children. You’ll find that this can help energise and prepare you for what the day may throw at you.

  3. You get the most out of your day
Tracey Marks, author of Master Your Sleep, said, “We are supposed to be awake when it’s light outside and asleep when it’s dark outside.” And if like us, you’re in Sydney and heading right into winter when the days are getting shorter, you’ll understand the urgency of getting up early to make the most out of the limited amount of sunlight. Even if you’re one of the lucky ones and live in a tropical country, getting up early means you are able to get the most out of your day.

  4. You’re more likely happier
According to a study by the University of Toronto, it was reported that morning people tend to feel happier and more satisfied with life compared to night owls. This may be because early birds often get more and better sleep due to a more consistent sleep-wake times, leaving them more alert and boosting their immune systems. Morning people also tend to get more natural light, which is better for your overall mood.

Waking up early gives you the opportunity to set aside time to think before the buzz of the day begins. Try setting your alarm an hour or even half an hour earlier and see how it makes a difference to your day. And if it doesn’t work out, well, at least you can say you’ve given it a go!
